Catholic and Christian: An Explanation of Commonly Misunderstood Catholic Beliefs

I enjoyed the book on a whole. However, he could of added a little more to some of his explanations. In other words I don't know if the book would convert anyone; who isn't Catholic. If you are a Catholic on the other hand, it is well worth the read. It can add to your understanding of Catholic beliefs. It also gives a good history of how the church developed and evolved. I would reccomend this book to read if you are seeking answers to the questions of why do we do this.

Catholic and Christian: An Explanation of Commonly Misunderstood Catholic Beliefs

This book needs a serious revision. There are many current Catholic doctrines and practices that are not addressed (i.e. why no married priests in the midst of such a serious shortage?). I would not give this to a person considering becoming catholic or someone who has questions because current issues are not dealt with well.

Catholic and Christian: An Explanation of Commonly Misunderstood Catholic Beliefs

Catholic and Christian by Alan Schreck is not unlike those other books written by the other Roman Catholic apologists and contains the same identical biblical scripture twisting since the Council of Trent propagating the deliberate omission and evasion of key differences between the Holy Bible and the Catechism of the Roman Catholic Church. For example: Biblical Responses to Catholic DoctrinesJustification by faith plus works ....... Rom. 3:24-26, 28; 4:5; 11:6; Eph. 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; Gal. 2:16Salvation conditional on man's faithfulness ....... Eph. 1:13-14; John 6:39; 10:27-30; Rom. 8:30; 11:29; Jude 24; 1 Pet. 1:3-5Tradition equal with Scripture in authority ....... Mark 7:9, 13; Col. 2:8Bishops are the only qualified interpreters of Scripture ....... 2 Cor. 4:2Mary's immaculate conception and sinlessness ....... Rom. 5:12; 3:10, 23Mary exalted as mediatrix ....... 1 Tim. 2:5Rosary and repetitious prayers ....... Mat. 6:7Purgatory purifies sins ....... Catholic and Christian: An Explanation of Commonly Misunderstood Catholic Beliefs

This book will not offend the non-catholic like others may. Best overall explanation of misunderstood beliefs about the church I have read. Both Catholics and non-Catholics will benefit from this read. When I explain to my family and friends my reasons for converting, I usually refer to this book.

Catholic and Christian: An Explanation of Commonly Misunderstood Catholic Beliefs

The author skillfully blends theology and history to demonstrate Catholicism's sound rational basis and validity. The book is somewhere in between an overview for beginners and a scholarly analysis for experts. It provides a wealth of information on what and why Catholics believe. Catholic readers may especially enjoy the "why" information; for example how bishops developed into the role they have today starting all the way back in second century. Non-Catholic readers will find clarification on many serious misconceptions about the faith, including issues relating to Mary, papal infallibility, celibacy, and Sacraments. Easy to read, balanced, containing a healthy number of Biblical citations and historical references, the book will help just about everyone advance their understanding of Catholicism.

Catholic and Christian: An Explanation of Commonly Misunderstood Catholic Beliefs

AS others have said, this book is an explanatory book, not a book to convert people. It explains Catholic dogma clearly, concisely, and charitably. It is written by a very able philosopher/theologian and is highly reccomended.
